What is Home Assistant?

Home Assistant is an open-source home automation system that lets you control all your smart devices from a single place — without cloud, without subscriptions and without dependency on external servers.

With over 3,000 integrations, Home Assistant can communicate with almost every smart device on the market: thermostats, sensors, lights, cameras, boilers, heat pumps and much more.

Why we use it at Smart Home Hellas: Every installation we do is based on Home Assistant because it offers local operation (no internet required), full user control and free updates forever.

Where does Home Assistant run?

Home Assistant can be installed on various hardware:

  • Raspberry Pi 4/5 — the classic choice, affordable and reliable
  • Mini PC / Thin Client (e.g. Dell Wyse) — more power, low consumption 8–15W
  • NAS (Synology, QNAP) — if you already have a NAS at home
  • Any Linux PC — via Docker or VM

At Smart Home Hellas we primarily use refurbished thin clients that consume only 8–15W — running 24/7 silently without overheating.

Which protocols does it support?

Home Assistant supports virtually every communication protocol:

  • Zigbee — wireless, low-power, mesh network
  • MQTT — lightweight protocol for IoT devices
  • Modbus RTU/TCP — for industrial installations and energy meters
  • 1-Wire — for DS18B20 temperature sensors
  • ESPHome — for custom ESP32/ESP8266 devices
  • LoRa — for long-range communication

How do you get started?

The easiest step is to get hardware with Home Assistant OS pre-installed. At Smart Home Hellas we provide pre-configured thin clients — just connect, open your browser and you're ready to go.
